Album Preview – Tift Merritt “Stitch Of The World”

“So much breaks, wears down, fails in us,” the poet Marge Piercy once wrote. “We must forgive our broken promises — their sharp shards in our hands.” But it’s difficult to be that generous toward disappointment. It’s so much simpler to keep on guarding a sublime ideal, to rail against a letdown, to reject a ravaged expectation by submerging in melancholy. That’s what makes the forgiving qualities of Tift Merritt‘s new album, Stitch Of The World, so [Read Entire Story]

Radio Garden: World Radio Everywhere at Your Fingertips

Screen capture of Radio Garden website. My Cape Verdean friend Evelise Gomes told me about a world radio website called Radio Garden a few weeks ago, but I didn’t have much of a chance to check it out. On Radio Garden, you tune in and point your cursor wherever in the world you want to hear LIVE local radio, and you’re there. Radio Garden only started in December 2016, [Read Entire Story]

RIP William Onyeabor

The pioneering electro/synth/soul artist William Onyeabor passed away in his sleep on Monday at the age of 70. Onyeabor was a businessman based in Enugu (Southeastern Nigeria) who began releasing music in 1977. Not a musician himself, there remains debate as to whether or not Onyeabor even sang on the eight records and two singles that he self-released between 1977 and 1985. That’s really of no matter though, as what Onyeabor lacked in technical musical ability, he more than made up for in [Read Entire Story]

Trey Songz: Anticipation 3

At the end of last December, videos surfaced of Trey Songz destroying a stage at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit during a mini-temper tantrum. The event staff who prevented Trigga from performing past the venue’s 11:30 pm curfew presented him a golden opportunity for free promo—the smirk on the singer’s mugshot, which went viral, all but announced “new music is dropping soon.” Sure enough, Trey Songz and his frequent collaborator, Fabolous, surprised fans with their joint EP Trappy New Years on New [Read Entire Story]

Review: Natalie Hemby, Miranda Lambert Hitmaker, Goes Solo on ‘Puxico’

A Music Row A-lister, Natalie Hemby's name brands most every great song on Miranda Lambert's latest LP, not to mention her co-writes for Little Big Town and Maren Morris. After a decade-plus behind the stars, her singer-songwriter debut is a tight-focus set inspired by her granddad's Missouri hometown (also the subject of her documentary, Puxico). It's a nostalgic LP, musically and thematically, about the value of roots – surprising, maybe, from a woman behind [Read Entire Story]

Power 106 Made Migos Rap Llama Llama Red Pajama To “Bad And Boujee”

With devilishly handsome looks, a killer smile, and the chillest attitude ever to grace the America’s Next Top Model set, Kyle McCoy captured the hearts of the curious (admirers regularly profess their affections on Twitter) and the competition (she struck up a steamy romance with fellow model hopeful Marissa Hopkins) across the show’s 23rd cycle. Her tenure ultimately came to an end on Monday night’s episode, however, as the 23-year-old fan favorite was sent packing after the judges almost [Read Entire Story]

Jeff Goldblum Wants You to Express Yourself

by Dustin Downing Actor Jeff Goldblum walked into our studios looking dapper as can be and was as charming and quirky as you would expect. For years I’ve been hearing about a weekly jazz residency he does here in LA, so I knew he enjoyed tickling the ivories — so much so, in fact, that when he spotted the famed piano in our performance space, he couldn’t help but serenade us with some standards and seemed incredibly happy doing so. Singing to Host Anne Litt, by Dustin [Read Entire Story]

Show #164: Music to Be Cool, Stay Cool

With Palm Springs the same temperature as Saudi Arabia or Rajasthan, here are eleven songs to help keep your cool. We begin with a cool blues by Charlie Parker called…what else, “Cool Blues.” Then the great singer/humorist Oscar Brown, Jr. tries to stay cool as calamity hems him in. We follow it with a stoner song by Rasputin’s Stash from the 1970′s, “Mr. Cool.” Albert Collins helps bring the temperature even lower with “Iceman” after [Read Entire Story]

Neko Case, kd lang, and Laura Veirs Make Beautiful Music Together

case/ lang / veirs  ALL PHOTOS by Larry Hirshowitz It all started with an email. kd lang sent a simple note to Laura Veirs and Neko Case asking if they would like to record together. They both quickly — and emphatically — responded with a yes. And so began the supergroup case/lang/veirs. Since kd and Laura both live in Portland, they started the process together with a few songwriting sessions. Neko (who lives on a farm in Vermont) added her flair during some visits to the West [Read Entire Story]

John Cage / Sun Ra: John Cage Meets Sun Ra: The Complete Concert

John Cage was a quotable artist. On the subject of albums, he once remarked that “records ruin the landscape.” Elsewhere, in a treatise collected in his 1961 book Silence, the composer offered some opinions about jazz. The genre “derives from serious music,” he wrote, “and when serious music derives from it, the situation becomes rather silly.” Given those harsh judgments, it makes sense to venture an opening question about Cage’s one-off appearance alongside swing-and-improv icon Sun Ra. If [Read Entire Story]
