PSN Not Down For Maintenance Early, Instead Seems DDoS To Blame?

PlayStation Network is down in North America right now, which lead some users to believe that previously announced scheduled maintenance had begun early. Sadly, that is not the case as a hacker group is claiming responsibility for an attack that also seems to be affecting Blizzard’s, League of Legends and Path of Exile. Now before some of you go back to thinking this is similar to the hack that took PSN down for several weeks a few years ago, this isn’t the same thing. In fact, a Distributed Denial Of Service (DDOS) is not technically a hack, its more accurately a computer attack that floods a specific site with erroneous data that prevents legitimate users from connecting.

At this time, users trying to log into PSN on the PS3 or PS4 are getting a message that PSN is down for maintenance. Sony had previously announced that PSN would be down for routine maintenance from noon till 7:30 p.m. ET on Monday. At this point, some are speculating that Sony may have already solved the DDOS issue and is simply taking this opportunity to complete the scheduled maintenance early, potentially avoiding to have to bring the service back up and then take it right back down which if true is logic we can’t say we disagree with.

The official Twitter account for PlayStation support continues to tell users that the issue is “being fixed” but that they have no time frame of when services will be restored.
